Access

The Library is open to all interested parties for research use: please write to the address below, telephone 01865 277262 (History Faculty Library before 1pm) or 274604 (Wellcome Library after 2pm) or email the Librarian, IN ADVANCE OF VISITING, specifying your area of interest and with any other enquiries.

The hours of opening for the Unit library are 9.30 am - 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday for Unit staff and students. For any other visitors you may only visit when the Library is staffed and by appointment.

The Unit and Library will be closed on Bank Holiday Mondays, for 3 days over the Easter weekend and for 2 weeks over the Christmas and New Year period.

This is a reference-only library, intended primarily to support the needs of the University's postgraduate students and researchers in the history of medicine. Its holdings comprise around 7,000 monographs, serials and theses on diverse topics. Most books are searchable on OLIS, the University's union catalogue, save a small proportion; theses and periodicals have yet to be added. Particular strengths include:

  • National and local public health administration within the UK
  • Hospitals and hospital movements (again especially within the UK)
  • Infectious diseases including and malaria and anti-malarials
  • Tropical medicine
  • Pharmacology
  • Biography; medical and non-medical

New materials are purchased to maintain diversity, but also to reflect current research interests of members - currently tropical, colonial (particularly Indian) and military medicine, plus the history of nursing.

Interlibrary loans

For economy of scale, the Wellcome Unit Library does not participate in the interlibrary loans (ILL) system, either in lending items to other Libraries in fulfilment of requests, or in accepting requests from University members; this facility is provided to staff and students of the University via many Oxford University Library Service (OULS) sites, including the Bodleian Library and some College Libraries.

For further ILL information for University members only: please see http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/users/gac/interlibrary/internal-members.html,
e-mail reader.services@bodley.ox.ac.uk, or visit the enquiry desk in any participating Library.

Information for external Libraries, on the Bodleian Library's ILL policy: please follow the 'Using the library' link at http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/, or e-mail ill@bodley.ox.ac.uk; please note also that the Wellcome Trust Library in London contributes to the ILL system - further details on policy can be found at http://library.wellcome.ac.uk/doc_WTL038871.html
